My First Blog Post, or Tumlbr, Twitter, and Their Ilk
As I sit here past midnight with sleep eluding me, and nothing better to do than watch repeats of Family Guy, and read biographies of long dead kings and queens, I decide it's about time to write a blog post. Now it seems I'm a bit late to the blogging game, as the Google searches for blog will soon be overshadowed by the searches for 'Tumblr', however that is exactly what I'm going to write about tonight: Tumblr, Twitter and many other social media services, and why I believe they're stifling creativity. I shall start with Twitter. The reason, I believe, why Twitter is stifling creativity, is the character limit. Most people may argue that sometimes more is less when it comes to writing, as with Hemingway's six word short story 'For Sale: Baby's shoes, never worn'. However Hemingway was a literary genius, whereas 99.99% of the human population, and indeed 99.999% of the Twitter userbase, aren't. So for every genuinely intelligent, thought-provoking or eloquent Tweet, there are about 99999 other Tweets along the lines of 'OMG, how drunk was I last night #onevodkashottoomany', the hashtag leading to people sharing similar sentiments so that the original tweeter may feel more secure in their rampant alcoholism, or Tweets expressing similar statements with equally inane content. What I want to say is, the average human being, can not express anything with value within 140 characters, and instead use it as an opportunity to update us on every aspect of their life, regardless of how unimportant it may be (for instance talking about what they're eating for breakfast). Now on to my problem with Tumblr, admittedly there is a lot of good stuff on Tumblr, however I find that it tends to be about 5% Original genuinely creative content, and 95% reblogging of said content, or self-indulgent hipster dreck/ pictures of themselves using a filter and thinking it makes them a photographer. For these reasons I tend to stay away from social media of any kind, as they give me a mixture of emotions that can only be described as anger and despair for humanity. Admittedly blogs are in no way better, but at least there's the chance of stumbling over an interesting read.
